The International Food Festival, Mdina
We were thrilled to be a part of this year’s food festival in Mdina which had a turn-out of 25,000 attendees. This was the first time that vegan food had ever been on offer, and what a great response we had! We worked hard to prepare a wide range of snacks and tasters including mini bean burgers in buns with BBQ mayo, ‘tuna’ rolls, sausages, cheese and pineapple sticks, cookies, sweets, chocolate caramel flapjacks and various milks such as soya, almond, oat and chocolate. We wanted to show people how easy it is to be vegan, and that they don’t have to miss out on all of their favourite food!
The food we offered was actually free, but there was a condition. Those who weren’t vegan had to watch a 4-minute video of where their food comes from called ‘Farm to fridge’. This included footage of the meat, dairy and egg industry.
Many people were horrified to see what happens to animals in these industries, including vegetarians who had no idea that male chicks were ground alive or suffocated in
the egg industry, and cows repeatedly artificially impregnated, having their babies taken from them at birth to be killed for veal, and then spending their whole lives hooked up to machines until they are too exhausted to produce milk and then sent off for slaughter for meat. The public were saddened by this realisation, and many vowed to change their ways from that day on, especially after being provided with useful information and tasty vegan food.
We were so happy to reach so many people, and hope to be a part of next year’s festival too. Thank you to all of you who came along and showed your support!
